Bugs and Numbers app

Bugs and Numbers

$2.99 iPad, iPhone ~ By Little Bit Studio

Bugs and Numbers for iPad

Some of the more incredible and detailed animation graphics out there at the moment! Some of them may be a little too real for the squeamish (I’m looking at you, parents!) Aside from the awesome graphics of insects and scenery, this is a great all-round interactive game that is really fun to play while you’re learning.

From hide and seek counting to drag and drop match games; even feeding the correct number of insects that are spinning around on a turntable, each game is quirky and incorporates an element of counting or mathematics. For an added ‘bonus’, the more games you play, the more bugs you collect for your terrarium that you can explore and add to as the game progresses. It may not be for the squeamish but it’s definitely a better alternative to the real thing!

Montessori Numberland

Montessori Numberland HD

$4.99 iPad, iPhone ~ By Les Trois Elles Interactive

Montessori Numberland

In true Montessori style, two kids travel through different outdoor scenes and find ways to learn from their surroundings, such as counting mountains and macaws, practicing drawing numbers and playing small games along the way. Of course it’s your child doing all this and each scene becomes almost a visual treasure map of interesting things to discover.

Fabulous illustrations and far-out scenes allow imaginations to be unleashed and fun learning an inevitable result. For students learning another language at school, the two adventurers can also become fluent in Spanish or French for multilingual counting fun.

Times Tables Pro

Times Tables Pro

Times Tables Pro

With the help of Wall-e's twin brother, this app provides a high-tech method to making your own maths quiz. The little robot takes you through practice and graded tests on whichever times tables you pick; you can even create a multi-choice, medium difficulty quiz on all of the times tables with 100 questions! (Only if you REALLY wanted to.)

Where this app really comes into its own is in the ‘History’ where a parent or motivated student can review their progress. This app is definitely pitched at school-aged kids who are looking to master their multiplications tables systematically.

Motion Math Zoom

Motion Math Zoom

$2.99 iPad, iPhone ~ By Motion Math, Inc.

Motion Math Zoom

Ones, tens, hundreds and thousands are spelled out along a sliding ruler of progressively larger (and smaller) animals. Your child must swipe and pinch, then pop a bubble containing a random number when they’ve found the correct gap the number fits in. This continues in levels of difficulty and gradually involves higher and higher (or smaller and smaller decimals) numbers.

Where this game gets really interesting is when you’re playing with numbers in the thousands (Dinosaurs!) that then require you to ‘pinch’ all the way down to the ones (frogs) to find ‘7602’. Difficult to explain, yet visually quite arresting and so expressive in explaining multiples of 10s, 100s and so on to your young child getting their head around big number concepts.

Mathematics bingo for kids

Squeebles Maths Bingo

$0.99 iPad, iPhone ~ By KeyStageFun

Squeebles Maths Bingo

This is a really cute way to play mental math in a way that may distract kids from the actual hard learning they’re doing. Who wouldn’t try hard if your incentive was collecting ice-cream flavours! This game is for your maths whiz, so from years 2-3 up, depending on their skill level.

But from there, with three levels of difficulty and covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (yuk!), plus a bonus mixed round, your child will have their maths skills honed to a blistering bingo pace.

Note: Parents, this one can be challenging for you too! How long has it been since you’ve done mental maths?
